How are socks made?
Socks have been worn since prehistoric times; they protected our ancestors from cold feet and infections. They were made from animal hair and were often very thick. Nowadays, cotton is often used, supplemented with synthetic materials for optimal comfort.
At Sokkies, we take very careful care of our production process. We use the best materials and attach great importance to a product of excellent quality. We would be happy to take you on a tour of the production process of our socks.
Step 1: The right materials
There are various ways to knit socks, of which cotton socks are the most popular. The choice of the right material also depends a lot on the final look of the socks.
Our socks are made of 80% % cotton, supplemented with 15% % spandex and 5% % elastane. The high cotton percentage ensures that the socks feel soft and that your feet can breathe well. The addition of spandex and elastane ensures that all our socks are one size fits all, suitable for sizes 38 to 46.
An emerging trend is socks made from bamboo. Good for our planet, because the bamboo plant is the fastest growing plant in the world. This bamboo plant is converted into bamboo fibers, which are then used to make textiles. Socks are made from bamboo yarn in one color. Bamboo socks are very fine and allow a lot of moisture to pass through.
In addition to cotton and bamboo, there are a large number of other materials, but these rarely occur.
Step 2: From design to sock
Once the design has been converted into a pattern file suitable for the sock knitting machine. These machines come in various versions, depending on quality. These include, among other things, the number of stitches around the socks; this varies between 96 and 200 stitches around the circumference. At Sokkies, we always choose to use the maximum number of 200 needles. This ensures the finest comfort and the design comes out in its best light.
The machine is set up and now it is going to make a kind of cylinder sock. The toes of the socks are now open. This is hand sewn closed with strong thread, so that it tears open. Socks are always made first in a trial pair that we check for quality in the factory. Once everything is to our satisfaction, the design is taken into mass production.
After the quality control, the socks are washed in water, so that any remaining threads are removed and the socks will not shrink in the washing machine. After washing, the socks are ironed; they are rolled up around a flat foot shape and ironed. This way, the shape of the socks is ready immediately.
Step 3: Pack it up and get out of there
After the final quality control, the socks are, if desired, labeled and packaged in a box. They are collected and shipped in bulk to Europe. Our socks are mostly produced in Asia, due to the high quality standard and relatively fast production time.
As soon as the socks arrive at Sokkies, we will double-check them again. A third and final quality check; after that, they will be sent by PostNL to you.
